BBB 2004-2005 Board of Directors Looks Ahead
With a recently hired Bureau president and CEO in place,
the 2004-2005 board of directors Better Business Bureau
of San Diego and Imperial Counties is looking ahead with
a new chairman of the board.
Steven Relyea, vice chancellor for business affairs at
the University of California at San Diego (UCSD), is the
new board chairman. He succeeds Allan Shaw, president and
CEO of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, San Diego
Area Chapter.
Relyea stated, "I'm honored to serve as chairman of
San Diego's largest county-wide business membership organization.
My goals for the coming year including increasing membership,
maintaining high membership standards, enhancing the Bureau's
customer service to members and consumers and achieving
even greater community awareness."
Serving with Relyea as officers on the board's Executive
Committee:
- Mary Ball, vice president of government and community
relations, Cox Communications, as vice chairman;
- Gail Jensen-Bigknife, senior vice president and credit
administrator, Security Business Bank, as secretary;.
- Craig Cornell, president, Net Cost Advisors, Inc., as

The BBB board includes three previously retired board members
who have been honored with the emeritus status designation.
They include Gary Cantor, Bruce H. Frost and Dexter C. La
Pierre.
As the chief financial officer at UCSD, a campus with an
annual operating budget of $1.8 billion and ranked one of
the top ten research universities in the U.S., Relyea oversees
campus-wide administrative operations, including financial
services, human resources, facilities, purchasing, administrative
computing, telecommunications, housing, food services, police,
bookstores, environmental health and safety and other campus
administrative functions.
He has served on advisory boards for publications such
as: "A Guide to Managing Federal Grants for Colleges
and Universities" and "College and University
Business Administration." He was a co-author of the
book entitled "Campus Financial Systems for the Future."
In 1999, Relyea's management team was honored as the sole
winner in the education category of USA Today's Quality
Cup Award. In that same year, the National Association of
College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) recognized
Relyea's management team with its first-place award for
innovation. In 2003, Relyea's performance management program
led to UCSD becoming the first university inducted into
the Balanced Scorecard Hall of Fame.In July of this year,
Relyea was named as NACUBO's 2004 Distinguished Business
Officer.
He serves on the board of the Corporation for Education
Network Initiatives in California and the NACUBO Research
Universities Council. He is leading a team to develop a
new business architecture for the University of California
system.
Prior his appointment to UCSD in 1986, he worked at the
University of California at Irvine (UCI) in a variety of
positions, including associate dean of planning and administration
and director of the physician practice plan. He has a master's
degree in management from UCI, and is a resident of Encinitas.
